I fell in love with musical theater at a very young age. Seeing plays, being in choir, being in dance, loving becoming a character, and immersing myself in the musicality and detail behind each and every moment spoke to me in a way nothing else ever could. Always singing, always dancing around, always creating in my own mind, it became a perfect outlet to harness my creativity in ways that spilled over into all the other genres of dance over the years in a way I could have never imagined.
My secret love affair with ballet was hard fought at first until I became enamored with the dichotomy of simplicity and complexity, mixed with characterization and flair, with the mathematical approach of achieving absolute perfection sprinkled on top. I was drawn in by the big jumps and turns and more and more by the tiny details and personality and fluidity of the movement and transitions as I began to progress. Some of my favorite teachers along the way encouraged me to be confident in myself and my interpretation of the movement and a style all of its own.
My relationship with TAP dance has been interesting, to put it lightly. Although I started out at age four learning all styles of dance, when I put on those tap shoes, something sparked within me on stage and gave me a confidence and a love for performance art that unknowingly shaped my love for music, my ear for rhythm and musicality, and my overall vision choreographically. I never wanted to be categorized as just having a focus in one area, so I used my tap skills to enhance and further nuance my abilities in other genres structurally and improvisionationally. However, whenever I lace up my taps, im always overwhelmed by a feeling of being brought back to my origins...and feel truly at home.
Everything i do, I do from the heart, which is why LYRICAL speaks to me on a whole nother level. Storytelling, hints of ballet technique, and pure emotional inspiration only enhance the artist i am at my core. From the soul, I always say, is the driving force behind my inspiration choreographically and that motivation ignites my passion to move to beautiful, heartfelt music.
I fell in love with concert dance the first time I saw a Robert battle choreographic work before the age of ten at what would later be my Alma mater, Booker t Washington High School. I had only ever been a competitive dancer, so seeing dance simply as an art opened my mind to so many new possibilities. The abstract nuances and shapes and patterns of MODERN dance intrigued me and further fueled a fire within me. When I attended the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, this locked in my appreciation for the raw power and strength and grace required to refine techniques considered outside the box.
Its safe to say I love all things JAZZ, and thats putting it lightly. From the music, to the detailed isolations, the classic and contemporary styles, and the influence, the jazz culture has shaped my identity as an artist in so many ways. Growing up on motown music, ive always had an affinity for art created before my time, which developed a love for musicians like Nina Simone and duke Ellington and Leo Parker, as well as pioneers in dance like Fosse.
Ironically, hip hop was the last genre I fell in love with. The music, the energy, the vibe, the HISTORY, the CULTURE, the FREEDOM of EXPRESSION led me down a road I followed, submerged myself in, and never looked back.
